I was reading a quick excerpt from Naval Ravikant this morning and it talked about how our culture is in such rough shape because everything is so abundant and available. Sugar, porn, news, science, alcohol, drugs and be list goes on and on.
Figuring out how to be disciplined in the age of abundance is a superpower that can propel you to levels that you never thought. Fasting, figuring out how to have sex with someone that you love, getting information on your own, doing your own research, stopping drinking or being in moderation, and challenging your own thoughts and firmly held thoughts. All of these things are very hard to do, take time, and take discipline. You also have to figure out how to peel away from the here. It’s hard, you will be mocked and ridiculed.
A few quick examples from my life that are counter culture and I get ridiculed for: I think Warren Buffett is very smart and I’ve learned a lot reading his approach and plan, but I think he is completely wrong about bitcoin and crypto currencies. I believe he hasn’t done the research and worked to change his engrained thoughts on currency and monetary policy. I spent a lot of time reading about the tech, looking at my own biases and had a eureka moment on why anonymous computer consensus based on math is a way better way to run monetary policy. You want to get ridiculed by your family and friends? Tell them you think Warren Buffett is wrong about something to do with money.
Fasting: I’ve been doing reading a lot lately on fasting and the modern diet and what I’ve found for myself is that fasting is hard, sugar is devastatingly addictive, many nutritionists are fools, the food pyramid is crap and a complete overhaul of health needs to come from diet. Type 2 diabetes is rampant because everything has sugar in it. Breakfast is NOT the most important meal of the day. Eating when you have an inkling of hunger is not a good think. Snacking is terrible. I started reading about all of these things and decided to start implementing them. I still get hungry but that is a sign to me to be disciplined now. I have way more energy during fasted states than fed states. Low fat items are terrible for you, we hijacked the word fat to make it a bad word. Animal fat is one of the best things for you that comes from nature. Health and weight are very taboo subjects these days so taking about them are very frowned upon, but what could be more important than your health? The sugar and eating epidemic puts a huge strain on our healthcare system and so much could be alleviated by some better education and discipline. Most type 2 diabetics die from heart disease because excess insulin is very bad for you, instead of lowering our sugar intake we pump insulin in the system, that is madness. Start today by getting sugar out of your diet. This means bread, rice, most processes foods and all seed oils (canola, vegetable, etc). Use real high fat butter or gee, eat meet and keep your eating windows short. Fast for 16 hours each day. You can roll your eyes and ridicule or you can try it for ten days and see how you feel. The first two days will suck, it is the sugar detox. Your health is worth it.
Sorry for the long diatribe, just wanted to write about some things that are counter culture but that I believe are correct from my personal study.
Lately I like the saying that success isn’t owned it’s rented and rent is due every day.
